As a corporal William John Duncan “Jack” Dempster led the 1911 expedition that discovered the remains of Francis Fitzgerald's "Lost Patrol." By the time he visited the Tidds in Mayo, Dempster had reached the rank of Inspector. The Dempster Highway, then under construction between Dawson City and Inuvik in the Northwest Territories, was named after him in 1963, the year before he died.

Did I tell you that Mr. Wasson brought us three real tomatoes when he returned from Whitehorse by plane, and they gave me the biggest thrill I've had in ages. Inspector Dempster was here to dinner that evening and you should have seen his eyes widen when I put them on the table in the shape of a rather pathetic little salad, without a sign of a lettuce leaf to make them look more.
